In the old kitchens of England, Wales, and France, these small dogs were not loved as companions; they were used as tools. Day after day, they were placed inside a wooden wheel near burning fires, forced to run so that meat could cook evenly. As the flames rose and the air filled with smoke, the dog kept running—tired, overheated, and with no choice to stop.
