  J&K High Court Calls for Stronger Penalties for Animal Cruelty J&K High Court Calls for Stronger Penalties for Animal Cruelty A significant observation for animal welfare and stronger legal protection The High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh has recently called for stricter penalties and jail terms for offences involving animal cruelty , highlighting concerns that the existing penalties under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 may not provide sufficient deterrence. The observations were made by a Division Bench comprising Justice Sanjeev Kumar and Justice Mohd. Yousuf Wani in Anwar Jan v. Union Territory of J&K . In the old kitchens of England, Wales, and France, these small dogs were not loved as companions; they were used as tools. Day after day, they were placed inside a wooden wheel near burning fires, forced to run so that meat could cook evenly. As the flames rose and the air filled with smoke, the dog kept running—tired, overheated, and with no choice to stop.
